Hi my baddie people,

Today we are going to cover the basic skills that every diva puppy should know.

Getting your little puppy can be overwhelming since there are so many new things to experience. Therefore, lets make the training department slightly easier by going through a guide of the first things you should be teaching your new fur baby.

There is obviously a huge variety of things that you can teach your diva, this is just a guide on the basic obedience commands that will help set you and your diva up for success for your future training endeavors.

Also note that this guide is not necessarily going to give you detailed information on how exactly to teach your diva these tricks. If you need some further details definitely continue your research!

Now let’s get into it shall we:

Name recognition

While this may seem like common sense, image if your puppy didn’t know their own name?

It seems like a very obvious thing but name recognition is extremely important. It helps build attention and engagement, while also serving as an important building block to teaching recall.

Your diva should turn their attention to you as soon as their name is said (or at least after a few times if you have a super stubborn one).

Come/recall

Recall is arguably one of those things that if you aren’t going to teach your diva anything else, teach them this. Especially if you plan to have them out in public.

Your diva needs to know how to come when called, regardless of the situation. This is ultimately a command that helps ensure the safety of your dog.

It prevents them from running away in dangerous areas, approaching other dogs who may not be fond of fellow dogs coming in their space, and just allows you to maintain proper control of your diva at all times.

You don’t want to be that baddie who other diva owners get pissed at because your baby has no recall…

Sit

Another obvious command that is nonetheless important to teach.

It is a very foundational command, that helps set a base for the rest of your diva’s training. It has many versatile purposes such as getting your puppy to wait in a certain area, or to just get their attention in general.

Down

Down is another common command where the importance of it can be overlooked.

The down command can be vital when you need your puppy to relax and settle down a little bit. Whether it’s in your home, at the vet, or when you’re trying to enjoy eating at an outdoor restaurant.

Stay

This is where commands start to get a little more advanced and you may start to run into some impatience with your diva.

It is super important for your puppy to know how to stay in one place for as long as you would like them to.

This is another foundational skill that helps create a basis for commands such as “place”, and just a skill in general that is useful in many situations. It is also just a general command that can really test the level of obedience your diva has to you.

Remember to start small with this one, and then work your way up.

Leave it

Leave it is another example of testing how obedient your diva is to you. It takes discipline and restraint which some divas may struggle to have.

This command prevents your puppy from messing with things they shouldn’t. Dangerous foods, random objects, or just something you don’t want dog saliva on (because that’s very understandable).

Drop it

This command is for when leave it doesn’t work.

If your diva has already gotten ahold of something they shouldn’t, they need to know that when you say drop it you mean it.

Another command that is important for their safety.

Place

Arguably the most advanced command in this list, but also one of the most useful.

Place is teaching your diva to go to their designated “place” when you need them out of the way. It can be when you’re eating dinner, when guests first arrive at your house, or just if you need a few seconds of relaxation.

This is where first teaching “stay” comes in handy.

Honorable Mentions:

Here are some honorable mention skills that are also super important and useful, but also take a little bit more time and effort.

At the end of the day, you want your diva to be as behaved as possible. So these additional commands will definitely help acheive that:

• Proper walking skills
• Crate training
• Heel or center
• No jumping
• Desensitization to things such as grooming, nail clipping, baths, etc.

Remember that training takes a lot of time, patience, and most importantly CONSISTENCY!

It doesn’t matter if your diva finally learns a new skill, if it isn’t consistently reinforced it will get lost and you’ll have to start all over again. Especially when working with young divas.

Everyone wants their divas to be good ones, so this list is a great start to get into training with your puppy.
